Petronia is a nineteen-year-old single mother from the village Lote 3. Her first language is Kaq’chiquel and she lives with her parents who help her with her son. She likes everything about the crochet project, especially that it helps her with her son economically. She only studied in school until the equivalent of the Jr. High school level. If she could, she would like to go back to school to study more. Her main responsibility besides taking care of her son, is to help in harvesting cardamom.

Susana is 20 years old and not yet married. She lives with her parents and has 3 brothers and sisters. She really likes working in crochet and is grateful to the women that come to teach them how to make new products with crochet. She likes to learn more and says the women do a good job teaching them. She does not know how to read or write, but if she had the opportunity, she would like to learn and study in school. Most of her days are spent helping in the home with cooking and cleaning.

Juana is 40 years old, and married with two children. She lives in La Ceiba and the first language spoken in her home is Ke'qchi. She says she is very happy to be working in the crochet project and her favorite item to crochet is Guatemalan bags. Many times her family is without money for food. She usually works in her home cooking and cleaning, but also helps in harvesting cardamom. Her earnings from working in crochet help her to contribute financially to the needs of her family. Her favorite day of the week is Sunday because she loves going to church.

Virginia is 40 years old and separated from her husband. When she was 2 years old her father died and she had to learn to work in the fields with a machete. She was married to her husband for 18 years but he abandoned her with their 6 children. She works in the fields with the help of her children to provide for her family. Working in the crochet project is a great opportunity for her to earn some income and do it from home.

Clara is 30 years old and lives with her husband and 5 children in a village called Agua Blanca.  Most of her time is dedicated to caring for her family and her daughter who was born with Spina bifida, a birth defect which left her unable to walk. She still has hope for her daughter to be well and learn to walk someday. In her free time, Clara enjoys working in her garden, sewing and crocheting. If she could travel, she would love to visit Spain from where her family originates.

Esperanza came to Tapestry Training with no crochet skills. Her husband accompanied her to the training to care for their baby so she could focus on learning the skill. She was a quick learner and finished the training with a beautiful crocheted doily in progress.
